C Section scar healing is a process and takes time. You might be worried about having a permanent mark on your skin, but you’ll soon realize it will be a forever reminder of the life you brought into the world. It’s pretty incredible.
It’s not as big as you think
A c section scar is usually a small, horizontal incision below your bikini line. The scar will fade over time and in many cases be barely visible years later.
Walking is the best “medicine”
As soon as you can get up and safely walk in the hospital, do it! You’ll be slow at first but just getting your blood flowing will help with recovery and reduce the stiffness that can come after surgery.
It may hurt to cough or laugh initially
This is normal in the first 1-2 weeks but holding a pillow on your incision when you laugh or cough provides a surprising amount of relief.
Your scar will fade over time
The redness of the scar will fade over time and it will be barely noticeable. There’s always the risk of infection with any incision but most c section scars heal well and are barely noticeable years down the road.
Some doctors also recommend using an ointment on the scar to promote healing. I personally used Earth Mama Skin and Scar Balm daily for a year following my c section and my scar is much less noticeable. You don’t have to use this specific product but there are tons of products out there.
It’s normal to be numb around your scar
As part of your c section scar healing, you may experience some numbness near your incision or even on one specific side. This is totally normal and not a complication. The doctor had to cut through nerves to deliver your baby, which can lead to numbness and even itching as your incision heals. For some, the numbness is a temporary feeling and for others it’s permanent.
C section scar healing doesn’t happen overnight but it will happen. With the proper rest, recovery and attention from your doctor, you will be back doing all the things you love in a few months’ time.
This post is based on my personal experience. Please consult your doctor if you have any questions about your recovery process.
