Knowing what to get new moms after they give birth can be so hard. But this post will help you put together a postpartum care package in no time!
Do you have a sister, cousin or friend who is giving birth or recently gave birth? If you are like me then you want to get them the perfect postpartum gift that is practical but that they will love.
In this post you are going to learn about how to put together a postpartum care package that your new mom friend will absolutely LOVE. It will include some postpartum essentials, gifts for new mom and of course something for the new baby as well.
So if you are ready, let’s get started!
This post is all about what to put in a postpartum care package for a new mom.
Postpartum Care Package
Having a new baby is an exciting time, but it can also be exhausting, overwhelming and downright hard some days.
Although you may be anxious to meet the little bundle of joy, it is always best to give the new parents time to adjust to their new life as a family and never put pressure on a new mom to come over and visit. When they are ready for visitors, you will know.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t show them some love and support in the meantime!
What To Include In A Postpartum Care Package
So what is a postpartum care package and what should you put in it?
A postpartum care package or postpartum care kit is just a little way to say “I’m thinking of you”.
What to get new moms might seem like a challenge at first but I promise you even the smallest gestures make new parents feel so loved and appreciated.
#1 – What To Get For Baby
It’s basically impossible to not buy an outfit (or two) for the new baby so full steam ahead on that!
My one caveat is to avoid buying anything in a newborn size. Babies grow out of that size clothing sooo quickly and some actually never fit into it. For that reason, I recommend purchasing an outfit in 0-3 months or 3-6 months.
Keep in mind that a new mom can never have enough onesies and zip up pajamas. They make newborn life so. much. easier. 🙂
# 2 – What To Get New Moms
My favorites include:
- Homemade food such as lasagna or soup – This is a lifesaver for new parents. New parents rarely have the time, energy or desire to cook real food, but need to eat, so heating up pre-made food makes eating a lot easier.
- Something sweet like chocolate chip cookies – There is nothing better than a cookie at 2am when you are up with your baby for a feeding, trust me.
- Mini bottles of champagne – Not one of the postpartum necessities necessarily but a fun touch.
- Postpartum Recovery Tea – I’m not sure if this makes a big difference or not but most people drink tea so it is something I like to include for my postpartum friends. If nothing else, it is a nice gesture.
- Candle – I’m always a big fan of candles and the way they make my house smell
- Picture frame – One can never have too many pictures in my opinion so I love picking out a cute frame the new parents can fill with one of their favorite pictures of the new baby.
- Succulent – They are so cute and require little maintenance which is perfect for new moms and parents!
Feel free to pick and choose from the list above – you don’t need to purchase all of the items!
Important Things to Keep in Mind
For any food you are preparing for the postpartum care package, I recommend buying disposable tin pans with covers. It makes cleanup really easy for the new parents.
I also recommend including a note that describes what the food is, if it is cooked or not, and how to reheat it. New parents are working on very little sleep so the less thinking they have to do, the better!
Putting Together The Gifts For New Mom
Once you have purchased everything you need, it is time to take care of wrapping any non food items. I like to use a combo of a cute gift bag and a small basket. I used this basket recently and really loved the way it looked!
You can buy a card too and write a nice message inside too. This will go a long way!
Delivering the Postpartum Care Package
The best part comes next: delivering the postpartum care package.
This is without a doubt my favorite part!
A few days after the new parents have arrived home from the hospital, I load everything into the car, take a drive to their house without knowing and quietly leave the items on their porch. I then send a text to the friend from my car to check her porch the next time she is up and I drive away.
Please please please do not knock on the door unless you have been specifically asked to come over. Some new parents are very open to seeing friends and family right away but for others, it can be hard to say “no” to guests.
I personally love the surprise when friends open their door to see a home cooked meal and a few treats. It makes me so so so happy to know that I have helped them (even in the smallest way) eat a delicious meal while snuggling their baby and not worrying about cooking or dishes.
But What If It’s a Family Member Having The Baby?
In this case, leaving the food and postpartum essentials inside the house before the new parents get home from the hospital is another amazing thing you could do!
This was actually the case when I had my son! We got home from the hospital to a fully stocked fridge, a lasagna, bakery bread, treats and so much more. Plus a balloon tied to our mailbox.
It was absolutely incredible and a huge relief because I was absolutely exhausted, overwhelmed and still questioning my new role as mom.
This Isn’t Just For New Moms
Keep in mind that you can use this post as inspiration for putting together a basket for another friend too even if they are not having a baby.
I have a friend going through an IVF journey and I really wanted to show her some love so I put together a basket for her as well.
I included her favorite candle, picture frame, nail polish and succulent in this cute basket and it was perfect. She really appreciated it and was so surprised 🙂
