Giving birth via c section is probably different than what you imagined birth to be but it does not make you any less of a mother. C sections, planned or unplanned, are common and are performed for a variety of reasons including breech baby, prolonged labor, fetal distress, repeat cesarean and many others. If you are having a planned c section, you probably want to know everything you can about what to expect, especially with c section recovery.
In this post you will learn all about what to include in your c section hospital bag, c section recovery essentials and so many c section recovery tips! Having a c section does not mean you are any less of a mother but it usually requires a longer recovery and specific tips for postpartum recovery.
This post is all about the most important c section must haves.
C Section Hospital Bag
With a planned c section, you can expect to be in the hospital for approximately three to four nights, which is longer than a typical vaginal birth without any complications. For this reason, you will need to pack a few extra sets of clothes.
It’s also important to understand that you will have an incision so loose fitting clothes are essential.
- Driver’s License and insurance card
- Phone charger
- Maternity or nursing nightgowns (2-3)
- Bathrobe and/or zip up sweatshirt
- Going home outfit
- Nursing bras (3-4)
- Nursing pads
- Rubber flip flops
- Slippers (optional)
- Socks
- Toiletries – Toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo/conditioner, soap, deodorant, brush/hair tie, chapstick
- Optional Extras: Boppy pillow, makeup, hair dryer, reusable water bottle, snacks, blanket

C Section Recovery Essentials
- Skin and scar balm – A skin and scar balm can really help with c section scar healing. There are so many out there to choose from but I personally used and loved this one. Make sure you clear it with your doctor before using it.
- Caddy or diaper cart– A caddy and/or diaper cart is KEY to a smooth c section recovery. I can guarantee that you will not want to be walking up and down the stairs multiple times a day in the early postpartum period so getting something to organize the diapers, wipes, blankets and spare outfits on the first floor of the house during the day will be a game changer for your recovery.
- Pack ‘n play with changing pad and bassinet – This makes diaper changes and naps on the first floor of your house infinitely easier in those first few weeks. Given you will be avoiding climbing the stairs multiple times a day to avoid any unnecessary c section recovery pain, this type of setup on the first floor is so helpful.
- Loose fitting clothing – This is key to being as comfortable as possible. You can expect your incision to be sore and tender during the first week and the last thing you will want is tight clothes touching it.
- Pre-prepped freezer meals or food from family – You won’t have the energy or desire to cook the first few days after coming home from the hospital so having something pre-made and easy
- A few good Netflix shows to binge 🙂
